Following a thirty-two year service Simpsons Malt employee John Mitchell (60) is set to retire from the family-owned business.
The Export Manager, based at the Berwick-upon-Tweed HQ, joined Simpsons Malt in 1984 in the role of Shipping Manager at the company’s previous Surrey office before becoming Export Manager in 1996.
During his time with the company, John worked closely with brewers and distillers and managed the logistics of transporting malt from Simpsons Malt sites in Berwick-upon-Tweed and Tivetshall in Norfolk across the globe.
John has seen massive changes at the maltsters over the years, he explains: “When I was first employed at Simpsons Malt, the malt was mainly delivered locally in Simpsons Malt lorries and vans: more recently I have transported our malt in 2500 tonne vessels across the world. It’s been a fantastic company to work for and great to see how much it has grown.
“I will be sad to leave but I’m looking forward to having more time for my garden and hill walking. My wife and I have also planned a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Canada later in the year.”
Commenting on John’s retirement, Simpsons Malt Vice-Chairman, Richard Simpson said: “John is a much valued employee and friend to many and will be missed. We wish him all the best in his retirement.”
